Jimkata Daytrotter Studio Session

While touring the Midwest last month we stopped by the Daytrotter studios and recorded four tracks off “Die Digital.” What a very cool experience being at their studios, The Horseshack, where they recently taped sessions with everyone from Bon Iver and The Lumineers to Grace Potter and the Nocturnals and Mumford and Sons. We hope you enjoy! Please hit REBLOG and tell your friends!

There’s perspective to be had when you’re sitting around outside, in a backyard in Austin, Texas, in the middle of March, legs wiped, body whipped, with a sweet, warm breeze licking and soft, white lights burning above you. There’s nothing like some tranquility after a bout of madness. There’s nothing quite like knowing that you’re about to get yourself back to normal in just a few more hours. There’s nothing like being able to be confident in such a thing, in rebounding back to the state that you feel most comfortable in. It can all suddenly feel like meaning abounds, that there are strings everywhere and there might be reasons for all the mad times that you have.
Listening to Ithaca, New York band Jimkata, on an evening such as this, after a real shit storm of a week, forces you to take stock in the nuances that usually blow right past us. The biggest problem is that new madness is never too far away. It always keeps you off balance, for that very reason.
When Jimkata lead singer Evan Friedell sings, “All the best things seem to surface after the worst/All the worst things seem to come around and go around,” we’re left considering the wasted amount of energy we put into our passing troubles. We know that things roll right on. They never stop and stand around for long. That’s just the way the beast works. These songs seem to be odes to the little decisions that are made to take back happiness, to keep calm in times of turmoil. They are about finding that happiness that was tattered a bit. They are about feeling fresh and finding light. They are about feeling worn, but with purpose.

BIG UPS to The Buffalo News for getting where we’re at!
Meanwhile, down in the underground, where the most exciting and dynamic music is almost always being made, DJs who still spin and manipulate vinyl records, as opposed to the “digital spinning” favored by the top-dollar DJs, are hooking up with real-time musicians to “jam.” And bands are employing laptops to keep the four-on-the-floor going while they construct compositions, improvise and take off on collective jams around that techno pulse. This is happening in Buffalo clubs that feature live music on a consistent basis, most nights of the week.
BIG UPS are also in order to The Earie Times-News for the glowing preview of our show tomorrow night!
Jimkata expects to return to Blue Heron, but before that it heads back to the Crooked I on Friday. The quartet is coming off a strong 2012 that included the release of breakthrough album “Die Digital” and touring across the country.
“I think it was a formidable year for us,” Friedell said. “‘Die Digital’ is probably the first record we put out that we all feel really confident in saying, ‘This is our sound, this is where we’re going.’ And it was our first year of real serious, organized touring. We learned a lot. We gained a lot of traction in new places and made new fans all over in places I never thought we’d be.”
The band played Minneapolis, Denver, Chicago and other major cities, as well as festivals with Umphrey’s McGee, the Roots and Steve Winwood. They turned a lot of heads with their groove-centric sound, which features powerful beats and a big guitar sound. Though they employ electronics, don’t expect Skrillex.
“The EDM name tag is like a buzzword of late, but, for us, we’re influenced by electronic and hip-hop music,” Friedell said. “That’s kind of where we get our driving beat. But we’re very much a songwriting rock ‘n’ roll band. We have those influences, but we’re not like DJs or live instrumental dance music.”
